Project Description
The City of Swan has a vast road network that must be maintained to ensure road users are provided with infrastructure that is safe, reliable, and fit for purpose.
The City of Swan has previously found efficiencies in the use of Foam Bitumen Stabilisation (FBS) for the rehabilitation of existing road pavement, as it is an efficient and cost-effective treatment with significantly less disruption to road users than traditional construction methods.
The City of Swan were seeking suitably qualified and experienced contractors to conduct characterisation of pavements for foam bitumen stabilisation at various locations throughout the City of Swan. 9 Sites were selected including sites in Ellenbrook, Aveley, Lockridge and Bellevue.
LLWA sourced resources or provided, sample collection, traffic management, GPRS Surveying, reinstatement of pavement from where samples were taken, machinery hire and site clean-up.
Over 10 days LLWA technicians used machinery to excavate 150kg of material from each site to be sampled at our base lab. The following test methods were conducted on the collected samples:
- Particle Size Distribution
- Plasticity Index
- Modified Compaction
- Determining the Foaming Characteristics of Bitumen
- Resilient Modulus of Foamed Bitumen Stabilised Materials
As a part of the scope of work it is required that Foam Bitumen Designs will be required as an outcome of testing completed at the base laboratory. LLWA subcontracted the design work to Talis Consultants who are professional engineers and specialise in Foam Bitumen design.
